Michael C. Barefield, a native of Hattiesburg, Mississippi, is resident Member in the Gulfport, Mississippi office of Barefield Law Firm, PLLC, with a diverse litigation, business/commercial, administrative and public entity practice. Mike enjoys an extremely high rate of success for both trial and appellate work in State and Federal trial courts and appellate courts including Mississippi, Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals, U.S. District Court, District of Colorado, U. S. District Court, Northern District of Ohio, and the U. S. Supreme Court.  Mike has specialized over the more recent years in the areas of product liability, premises liability, commercial litigation, construction litigation, administrative law, public entity liability, and governmental law.

Mike previously served as Attorney for the Perry County Board of Supervisors, which required counseling the Board, the individual Supervisors, as well as other County officials in the performance of their legal duties. Mike also defended the County and the Perry County General Hospital in all litigation.  Mike has been retained to counsel other Counties, parties and entities on issues ranging from Redistricting, Jurisdiction, Zoning, Taxation, Financing, Tort Claims, Public Waste Disposal, Liability and Immunity.  Mike has successfully defended Forrest, Marion, Jefferson Davis, Franklin and Perry Counties in litigation.

As an Advocate, Mike has testified before the United States House of Representatives on behalf of clients on Civil Rights issues and has advocated the numerous legal and political issues set forth above before numerous governmental bodies. Mike has been involved extensively in politics and public service most of his adult life, advocating both legal and political issues.

Mike has practiced in Hattiesburg, Jackson and Gulfport, appearing in Court in the following Counties in Mississippi: Hancock, Harrison, Jackson, George, Greene, Stone, Pearl River, Lamar, Perry, Forrest, Jones, Jasper, Wayne, Lauderdale, Smith, Clarke, Covington, Rankin, Simpson, Hinds, Copiah, Lincoln, Jefferson Davis, Franklin, Lawrence, Marion, Walthall, Pike, Kemper, Noxubee, Adams, Jefferson, Claiborne, Warren, Newton, Yazoo, Madison, Holmes, Washington and LeFlore.  Nearly half of Mississippi's 82 counties.

 

Mike has served the Mississippi Board of Bar Admissions in one capacity or another since 1991, serving as Member until 2000, bar exam grader and Member of the Committee on Character & Fitness 2000-2003, and again a member, 2003 to the present.

 

Stone D. Barefield, Of Counsel, is resident in the Hattiesburg Office.  Stone is a former State Legislator, having served 24 years in the House of Representatives.  Stone also served for over 20 years as the Attorney for the Forrest County Board of Supervisors.  Stone continues to serve the needs of the public as Attorney for the Southeast Mississippi Air Ambulance District and the Leaf and Pearl Rivers Rails-To-Trails Recreational District.  Stone serves the Firm well with an understanding of the law and a wealth of knowledge possessed by few attorneys in the State of Mississippi.
